I love the feel of clay spinning between my hands! I’m Lin Barber. The dogwood carving on my pots is right out of my business name, Dogwood Pottery. I make handcrafted functional stoneware pottery. My arts and crafts store include mugs, bowls, platters, pitchers, and vases. You'll see some fun pieces like toothbrush or soap holders, colanders, or chip and dip sets from time to time as well!
I decorate the surface on many pots using a sgraffito technique where I carve dogwood flowers, oak leaves with acorns, and other objects from nature into the clay. The insides of the pots are glazed but the outside isn't so you're able to feel the carving.
I also texture the surface of some pottery using pieces of plants so the plant design is transferred to the pot.
We're located in Asheville, N.C. Most of my glazes remind me of our Appalachian mountains, blues, greens, and browns.
All of my pottery is lead -free, microwave safe and dishwasher safe.
When Christ was on earth, the dogwood grew
To a towering size with a lovely hue.
Its branches were strong and interwoven
And for Christ's cross its timbers were chosen
Being distressed at the use of the wood
Christ made a promise which still holds good:
"Not ever again shall the dogwood grow
To be large enough for a tree, and so
Slender and twisted it shall always be
With cross-shaped blossoms for all to see.
The petals shall have bloodstains marked brown
And in the blossom's center a thorny crown.
All who see it will think of Me,
Nailed to a cross from a dogwood tree.
Protected and cherished this tree shall be
A reflection to all of My agony."
